Finally Finishing Maldives

One of my resolutions this year is to blog every day. I have three blogs - this one (my travel blog), a review blog, and my mermaid/conservation/marine life blog. So, if I blog every day that doesn't mean that this blog will have a new post every day, but I will try to post more regularly on here and update ya'll on finishing my Maldives stories and some of my other 2021 travels. So please bear with me. Thanks

Okay so going back to finishing Maldives since that's where I left ya'll off on... I ended with the manta visiting our boat and the beach party. To be honest I don't remember what order things happened on so I'll be using my Google Photos to keep things in order and keep me on track, but as you know Maldives was all the way back in September 2021 so don't expect as much detail as if I did keep up as it was happening as I am supposed to do. Maybe this year.

Next up on my Google Photos after the beach party night is a picture of my bed glowing green underneath because I thought that was cool so I guess I spent more time listening to music while the boat moved from one location to the other.

There are also more dive videos but nothing out of the ordinary. While I traded some spa for more dives, I was still there to mermaid so I went on about 2 dives a day and 1 mermaid excursion a day. The next mermaid we did took us to another private beach, but we did underwater shots this time, woo hoo. I've swam literally all over the world and man, that had to be the saltiest water I've ever swam in. I couldn't last very long due to my eyes burning so bad! However, I did bring 2 outfits, my mermaid tail obviously as well as a Christmas outfit I really wanted shot underwater and would have gladly sacrificed my eyes for but they didn't give me another opportunity. I was disappointed about that but at least I got to swim at the beach.

After the photoshoot the divers came to join us as well and we had a cocktail party on the beach. It was a fun time. The palm tree and drinks made the sunset (honestly I think southeastern US sunsets are prettier but the Germans made it seem like this was the best sunset they've ever seen). The crew also relaxed and that was the most they've talked to us I think. It was dark/late when we got back so after dinner I just went to bed.

The next day we did another shark dive. There were tons of silvertip reef sharks, a few sleeping baby nurse sharks, and some grey sharks. I love sharks so it was great! I'm not sure if this was Fish Head or if the shark dive I already told you about was Fish Head, but I just reread what I wrote for the other main shark dive and I didn't mention Fish Head and I feel like I would have if that was it so I'm going to explain it now and we'll say it was for this dive. So Fish Head is where years ago, fisherman would go to fish (duh they're fishermen) but when they'd reel in the line, all that would be left is the fish's head because sharks would have eaten the body before they got it back to the boat. Now that I've typed it all out, I remember that Fish Head was actually a place that had sharks in the past so it wasn't one of our shark dives but anyways whichever dive we did at Fish Head I was like "cool so that means there'll be shark teeth from all the previous sharks" and I found 2 shark teeth during that dive which was super exciting and made my week. Yeah, pretty sure I do remember already telling ya'll about that but whatever.

Anyways same day, not sure if it was the same dive or the next dive, we had to perform an emergency rescue. Jens the videographer is a big boy so he has large lungs that use a lot of air, plus carrying the video equipment causes him to use even more air as well. He was at 70 bar so we were already on our way back when our guide ran into the guide of the other group, so he sped off super quick to go show the other group a ghost pipe fish. Then Jens's air was suddenly only at 20 bar so our guide gave Jens his octo and our entire group started to make our way up but we kept swimming while ascending so we could still see things and did our safety stop because there was enough air left. Additionally I barely use any air so Lydia and I were prepared to give Mizzy and Jens our octos if Mizzy's ran out as well. Ariane took Jens's camera equipment, Lydia deployed the SMB, and I was prepared to offer my air hose to whomever needed it next (like I said I was still almost completely full). We made it back up to the boat safe and sound with no real problems and the guide said it was the smoothest rescue he's ever done, go team.

That night was our last night aboard the Scubaspa, so we had a celebratory party onboard where they gave us a free drink woo hoo! They also had sushi and dumplings for dinner and it was the best dinner of the entire week.

The next day my flight wasn't until late so the took us to Hluhlue Resort to spend the day because due to the rona, no one was allowed into the city. Which is unfortunate because that's why I booked such a late flight so I could explore Male on the way back, but oh whale.

So we get off the boat and there is a shuttle to the hotel but Europeans like to walk and they're like "it's right there we can see it" so for some insane reason we walk to the hotel??? I'm mad about it tbh. & I tell them I'm taking the shuttle back to the hotel. So eventually we make it even tho we're all sweaty and gross and they give us a hotel room in pairs (I shared with Emma) and a coupon for a free drink and 20 minute spa massage. So we go refresh in the room then head down to the pool and beach. We end up going in the pool and it's a bit cold but oh whale.

After the pool we go to get lunch in the restaurant because I'm starving. I get a steak sandwich and it is amazing, much better than 99% of the food we had on the Scubaspa. Once lunch is finished, we go to the spa to redeem our coupons. The drink is the same ginger tea they had onboard but cold instead of hot or hot instead of cold I forget which was which but they were both basically straight ginger so I couldn't drink either because it literally burned my throat. But whatever it was free. After our 20 minute head/neck massage I go to the beach and Emma goes back to the room for a nap. The beach is pretty packed because the entire football team of I forget which country is also at the hotel due to the no exploring the city rule. I think Sri Lanka? Anyways so I go back to the pool where I meet up with Kat and the gang. Then they start doing cheer stunts and don't include me on them despite me being a cheerleader as well so I go back to the room to take a warm shower and have a lie down.

When we are ready to leave, the whole gang is there to give us a grand goodbye as we board the shuttle to the airport for our flights.

I get to Doha and I am exhausted and do not want to spend another 10 hours in the airport for my layover. It takes going back and forth to several different desks, being sent literally all over the airport, but I finally get switched to the flight that leaves within the next hour. It cost $200 and I didn't get a row to myself but it was worth it to get home literally an entire day earlier. I'd go to Maldives again, but after being so many other places in the world I do think Maldives is overrated. We saw whale sharks, mantas, and lots of other sharks so that's all great and it's definitely the best place I've been for mantas but in terms of overall I preferred South Africa and French Polynesia.

Until next time,

'Cause Ya Had a Bad Day

Okay, wow, so it's already almost April and I haven't caught up since the end of Feb. I think that I'm just gonna work backwards and maybe when I post I'll post them in the right order and if not, sorry. Internet and time are two commodities that I just don't really have here. So yeah sorry.

March 22

Today is Monday, March 22. We finally have a day off so I could sleep in and I only slept until 8am but I guess that was good enough because no puking this morning, yay! For those of you that don't know, when I don't get enough sleep, I throw up. It's not the heat or bugs, this bed is just rough and the walls are literally made of paper so there's so much light and noise constantly coming in. But I finally got some good sleep last night so that's very exciting.

So yesterday we went diving again! Woo hoo. Sam is on vacation and Nick isn't at Sharklife anymore (he'll be back to Sodwana in a week but with Scuba Center). So in the past week we (Craig and I) have gone diving with Coral 3 days and it was my week to dive Raggie Reef. So I've been diving a lot. Glad to get my logged dived numbers up as I didn't even have a dive log until my Advanced (so I'm missing all the dives between open water and advanced) and everyone keeps harping me on not being "experienced enough" even tho I only need 40 logged dives to start my divemaster, which I'm gonna go to Honduras to get after mermaid season.

Sidenote, I turned music on to help me focus but it's doing the opposite and I've been jamming instead of writing for a half hour lol ya'll might never get these blog posts just know I'm having a great time and I love South Africa.

Anyways, yesterday's dives. So I love diving with Donno. It's so fun when we go diving because I can just relax and we just have so much fun finding shark teeth and booping regs and making bubble rings and such. So whenever I dive with Coral and he doesn't get to come I get a little sad but yesterday's dive was actually SO GOOD and Donno wasn't even on it. I know a lot of the Coral divers because as Matt said, I spend like every night at Vis-agie, the bar/restaurant/resort (they have the best Wifi in town). So we were supposed to go diving with Liam, Craig's old instructor, so I was like "okay at least I know him" but then he got bumped off onto a different dive so we ended up with someone I didn't know, but it was one of the best dives I've had here.

We got to go to Ribbon, which is on 5-mile, which is so much sweeter than 2 mile AGAIN. I hadn't been to Ribbon so I was actually pretty excited. So our divemaster, Stef, actually has family on Kent Island, of all places! and NoVa and Annapolis, so he actually visits Maryland quite a bit and learned to sail in Baltimore. Interesting. So I should make friends with him (4/14 as I'm typing update I did make friends and have his WhatsApp). But back to the dive, we saw a grey reef shark! I love sharkies! (Duh) and I was working on my breathing because the day before at Raggie Reef, Grant said my bubbles are too loud and scare away the raggies, so I need to exhale slower. So Nat was saying how she breathes in 8 out 16 and it helps preserve air too. I'm already really good at not using air but I need to not scare away the sharks so I tried and I was like very concerned because breathing like that actually makes me breathe a lot more, but it is more controlled and after the 45 min dive I still had 140 bar of air left so even tho I breathed more it used less.

There was also a Scuba Center boat there before us and on our fancy dive I found a GoPro! I figured it came from Scuba Center boat and I'd look at the footage to see who to give it back to but dude our boat wasn't even pulled onto the beach yet when the Coral guy driving the tractor was like "did you find a GoPro it's from Scuba Center" like yes I know that, chill, they'll get it back. So we took it back over there and turns out it's Nat and Summer's manager/friend, Nikki's! I just had dinner with her yesterday. Honestly, not a fan but whatever, she gave me a piece of peanut butter fudge as a thank you and since I was already at Scuba Center, I went to say hi to Connor and them and he was like "go back to Coral" ok fine then, be that way. Whatever.

By the time I got back over to Coral, Donno had arrived but he was busy with some Caitlyn girl from Joburg that he met on Valentine's Day which is 4 days before he met me and she was just back down to visit for the weekend and they were gonna go spearfishing after her dive. So between the Scuba Center encounter and being replaced, if only for the weekend, had me feeling a little salty, which is sad because I was in such a good mood after the dive and talking to Stef. & ya'll know how I'm not very good at fixing my face and when I get upset it looks like my best friends just died. So Donne and Donno kept asking me if I was okay, oopsie. So then Donno and Craig and I went snorkeling until it was time for our next dive and my dang GoPro was dead! Wouldn't even turn on even tho I thought I charged it all night. The stupid wire was loose, it's fine now but I didn't have it for snorkeling with Donno or my second dive.

So anyways since I was in a mood I was like "oh wait I'm a mermaid, I can just go chill on the bottom til I calm down" so I go down and LOL I am in a town of divers so Donno comes down too but he's wearing a weight belt and I'm not so he can chill down longer than me so that plan went horribly lol. On the way back up from snorkeling Donno was like "did you have fun" and I was like "sure" and he was like "well if you didn't have fun I just won't invite you again" and I know he was joking but I probably looked like I was going to cry. Then we got back up to the Coral area. He was hungry so I gave him a granola bar and pretzels and I didn't want any pretzels but he kept feeding them to me anyways and with each pretzel I felt a lot better lol

Our second dive was with Sascha and in the afternoon the winds and current pick up so it was a drift dive over 2 mile. There were only 5 of us including Sascha so she tried to convince Donno to come with us but he had a blister on his toe and his gear was back at camp so he refused but at least she tried.

The topography was actually really cool and there were a lot of places to swim in/out/below/through so that was fun. I also practiced breathing like Natalie said again and this time over about 76 minutes only went from 225 to 130 bar. Craig is amazed at how little air I use. With Natalie's way of breathing I can't even hold my breath (which you should never do on scuba anyways!). Unfortunately, I really, really, really had to pee and I have 2 rules - don't pee in the tail and don't pee in the wetsuit. So I was really hoping Craig would run out of air soon so we could go up and he did, but it was only like less than 10 minutes before everyone else anyways.

Then when we got back I saw Caitlyn was using the towel Donno brought which is actually Nick's towel and it put me in a mood again but then My Girl (the country song, not the Motown song) started playing and reminded me of home and my Bville boys and I was comforted. Then we got back to Sharklife and I had a Snapchat from Jacob! 9000 miles away and he still got my ESP. I really love those Travers boys. They always pull thru when I need them.

So I spent the rest of the night snapchatting Jacob until our CSP scheduling meeting. I was scared Morgana wouldn't book me due to me being in Africa and therefore not vaccinated yet, but the first few gigs are in Delaware/Ocean City so I was the first one offered! I'm pleasantly surprised the internet worked for the whole thing but it did and now my schedule is full and after the call I determined where I can fit in Mermaid Camps and holy poop, it's gonna be a busy summer/fall. Literally no days off because lifeguarding, but I only have those few months to make all my money for the year so bet I'm gonna make it worth it. & the mermaid camps are all client depended of course, I think I need at least 4 per camp to have it run. Then it looks like Nov-Dec I can go to Honduras for my divemaster and be back in time for Christmas. Things are looking bright for a career/future full of mermaiding, diving, and travel.

Until next time,

February 2021

 March 2, 2021

!Hola mis amigos!

Let's get this blog writ! I've been trying to write this for hours, actually weeks lol, but then I was distracted by texting my grandmother. So, as you know, my computer and/or the internet is constantly caput. Which makes it super hard to do the business accelerator program I'm in until the end of the month as well, which I should be doing right now to be honest but oh whale. Another thing I don't like about having to hand write my posts than transfer them online is that my handwriting is super sloppy so I hope I can read what I'm writing bc my hand already hurts which makes my chickenscratch worse.

Anywhos, it's now March. March 2nd. I've been here since February and have updated ya'll on nothing but sucky internet. Oops. So I guess I'll just start at the beginning and along the way we'll see if it's a big summary or lots of little detail posts but the more detailed posts will come after Nick leaves because he leaves me tired lol he's only here for a few more weeks, sadly. Not sure if I mentioned it in my other post or not, but Nick is like South African Kai, like they are carbon copies of each other (except Kai is skinnier and older with blue eyes) and it is so nice to have friends that are like family and just like idk what I'd do without Kai at home, idk what I'm gonna do without Nick here. I've been trying to make other friends too of course but it's just not the same as having a "brother" here with me. Nick is coming to school in America tho so that's cool, maybe we can go diving in the States.

So that's not the beginning lol. The beginning is I arrived at Sharklife. I already told ya'll about the room and food. So the first day, we got up at like 5 and were supposed to go out on the boat so we take the boat to the beach (they do beach launches here) and the water was super rough and we came right back and didn't even go out. Nick's mom and girlfriends and friends were here for Nick's mom's birthday so she took us to lunch/breakfast and I got a banana milkshake and it was actually kinda gross but now I get the Oreo milkshakes and those are great. Anyways, so since Nick's mom was here, he got the day off and Sam showed me how to do I3S, the database system we use to match raggies based on their spots so we can track when we've seen which raggie shark where to track their migration patterns and movements. Then, since Craig still wasn't here, Grant said I could have the rest of the day off too to rest. But like these walls are literal paper (bamboo paper) thin and I can't sleep during the day so I was just laying here wishing I was better at making friends, snapchatting my friends back home and then Sam needed help finding her dog, Chidi, so I helped them look and poor Nick, I haven't left his side since lol.

The next few days it was tropical storming so we just stayed in the office doing I3S. At first it was really easy because the matches came really easy but it gets frustrating because the quality of the photos aren't the best and it's hard to see the spots and I'm already like blind so sometimes it's hard. Lila suggested I print the pictures and highlight the spots to match but I can't because there's literally thousands of pictures and it needs to be in the database system. Eventually Craig arrived and we did I3S and had some lessons on the boat and how to set it up and take care of it and all that, but Nick already showed us so we already knew a bit.

Eventually, it stopped hurricaning, but it lasted for a solid week and stretched all the way from Africa to Madagascar (which is another place I want to go - these South Africans have me wanting to explore all over. I've already told Avnish for years I'd come visit him in Mauritius and now let's add Mozambique and Madagascar to the list as well).

So on February 18 I went on a dive and I had a hard time equalizing and was freaking out. Madison said the storm pressure was probably affecting it and Lila and my dad said I just needed to practice but I was very upset because I didn't want all my dives here to be so awful because dives like that are why I lowkey hated diving. Hated past tense because now I love it, bring on instructor, but we'll get there lol. So anyway, it was still hurricaning so then we didn't go out again until Feb 23rd, with a girl I actually went to college with!

Michelle is getting her PhD and doing her thesis on Manta Rays so she came to Sharklife to do some research for that thesis. Turns out she was a senior at Eckerd when I was a freshman! I didn't know her, but we do have a few mutual friends and I was like Sharklife would be a great winter term for Eckerd and she was like "yeah I'm already talking to Grant about it" lol so yeah. Anyways, before we went down I was like "it might take me a bit to get down because sometimes I have equalization issues" but BRO. MY EARS EQUALIZED ON COMMAND! For the first time in my entire life, including all my dives and rescue diver and all the planes I've flown and everything! So that's amazing. It only took almost 24 years, tons of scuba and freediving classes, and countless plane rides but I can FINALLY equalize! Woo hoo! I was so excited to call and tell my dad but he was working.

I then went out diving every single day until our day off on Saturday and haven't experienced equalization problems since. Woo hoo! Happy days. Now I love diving and will definitely advance to dive master and even probably instructor.

Okay, Nick is saying we're going out in 15 minutes now so I guess I'll end this post here and catch up with ya'll next time. Just keep swimming ya'll!

Until next time,

xoxo,

In the Shark Tank

AHH SHARKS FINALLY YESSS SHARKS !
So I love sharks. Like a lot. Like they're awesome. So I was super hype to go shark diving at the aquarium here in Auckland.
Monday morning though, when I had to get up I was super tired and didn't want to get up. But then I just had to remind myself I was getting up to go dive with the SHARKS and I got myself up and took an Uber over to the aquarium.
They Uber guy went past the entrance to drop me off at the exit because I don't know why. So I had to walk all the way from the other side of the area to the entrance, but it was cool because the footpath was little penguin feet. It was adorbs.
I was a bit early, so I had to wait at for the guy to come get me. The waiting area was next to these fish things that were super shiny and they moved their fins like wings instead of fins, as if they were flying. They were hypnotic. I kept looking around trying to find a sign to see what they are, but I didn't see one. But I spent the whole time waiting just looking at them. They were cool, man.
So then our guide, Patrick, came to take us in the back to get ready for our dive. It was just me and a girl from Perth, Michelle. Michelle never dived before so Patrick gave us a run through of like general safety for diving, then he explained about the types of sharks we would encounter: Sand Shark, Broadnose Sevengill Shark, School Shark, and Wobbegong Shark, along with a Short Tail Stingray, and a Moray Eel. Oh my goodness I was excited.
Then we got all ready in our wetsuits, booties, and hoods and headed into a little area before the main tank where we were put into our BCD with the tanks and such already hooked up for us. Then we had to remove and reinsert our regulator while underwater and clear our masks before we could move into the shark tank. But then we headed down into the main tank and climbed over the human tunnel to get to the area we would be chilling in to observe the sharks. When I say chilling, I mean chilling. The water was FREEZING. I was seriously very cold.
last time i was an aquarium fish
Florida 2016
Other than being cold, it was the best dive I've ever been on lol. We were only 8 feet underwater, so it wasn't like it was an intense dive or anything, but it was nice. I've never been so content/at peace/at ease in my whole life. I could've stayed there forever. Also, I'm pretty sure I was an aquarium fish in my past life because I love being a fish in an aquarium.
So anyways there were lots of sharks and they kept swimming up close, even the Wobbegong which is like super old and likes to just chill on the floor. The stingray also kept swimming up to us and I really wanted to touch it but we weren't allowed.
But our safety diver, Adam, took lots of pictures and videos and we got copies of all of them so I have lots of good pictures and I made a video which you can find on my Facebook page.
So yeah we just like chilled, looking at the sharks and the people going through the tunnels. Oh and these two little pink fish came right up to me and I might've had a staring contest with them (I won both times). Like I honestly think they wanted to give me fishy kisses. It was actually super adorable.
So now I'm just gonna post some cool pictures for you but there will be more words after the pictures so keep reading!

Once we were almost frozen solid, it was time to get out. So we headed back out and got in super hot showers. Like the shower at my apartment isn't as warm. It actually felt super nice because I was so cold; usually hot water makes me super dizzy so I have to take medium to cold showers.
Even though the dive was AMAZINGly awesome, something was wrong. My ear felt like I broke it again. We were only in 8 feet of water; if I seriously hurt my ear diving in 8 feet of water, there's something majorly wrong with me. Then I remembered what I learned about myself in yin yoga - I clench when I'm uncomfortable. Although mentally I had never been more comfortable, physically I was freezing. My knees (thankfully) couldn't clench because they were bent as a seat for the rest of my body. My hands were clasped together super tight to keep from shivering, which leaves my jaw. I was unintentionally and unaware-ly biting so hard on my regulator to try to keep from shaking in the cold that I had actually seriously hurt my jaw. I confuse my jaw with my ear more often than not, to be honest. So I hadn't hurt my ear in only 8 feet of water; I had just clenched my jaw so hard that it hurt really, really badly. At least my ear was fine.
See, showers are great. They let you think through your problems to figure them out logically. It would not have been logical for me to have busted my ear in only 8 feet deep. But my poor jaw can clench rather hard, making it totally possible (and it certainly happened based upon this pain) to cause a pressure problem when it finally unclenched itself.
Maybe that's also why I have a chewing gum problem...I always thought it was just to relieve the pressure in my head but it probably relieves some jaw pressures as well...interesting.
Anyways, after my shower, Patrick gave us some sharks' teeth he found on the floor of the tank. He had already given us each one while we were in the tank, but he found more on the way out. Michelle got two sand shark teeth and I got three (yeah he must like me better) seven gill shark teeth (two from the top of the mouth and one from the bottom). Oh my goodness I was excited. I used to have a shark tooth necklace that I bought at some souvenir store somewhere and I loved it so much I slept in it and it cut up my chest and arm really bad. It's a good thing these teeth are just teeth and not on a necklace haha. I'm so excited to have teeth that came straight from the shark and not straight from the store (who got them from a shark but still...it's more sentimental this way haha).
After he gave us our teeth, he showed us some of the fish in quarantine and explained how they got there/where they're going and took us to the sea turtle to explain about their sea turtle rescue program, which is kinda similar to the one at the Baltimore Aquarium (aqua.org baby). The sea turtle was really small but it's the smallest sea turtle species in the world so that's as big as it gets.
Oh, speaking of the world, the sharks are from New York, so they're still on Northern Hemisphere cycling, so for them they're in mating season, so the girl had lots of bites on her because that's how they keep from drifting apart when they're doing their thing, and sharks have super strong skin as a result so they can put up with all the biting and they also heal super fast because of it. Oh and since they're from New York, they were flown to the Auckland aquarium and it's currently the longest airtime/flight time a shark has experienced. So these sharks are like pro flyers. No wonder we connect so well, us east coast USA creatures.
Okay back to the turtle, it got sent to rehab because it was hit by a boat, like a lot of turtles are. It also ingested some plastic, like a lot of turtles do. So it was in bad shape. So yeah, don't litter. Watch your plastics. Be careful of turtles when boating.
After we were done with our little behind the scenes tour, we got free hot drinks at the cafe while we were waiting for our picture/video package to be delivered with our certificate of survival. I wasn't expecting all that, so it was really nice. Of
(Sorry for the interruption but Heaven Knows just came on my Pandora and that's my dive song and yes I'm so pleased right now. How perf. Dude I love the pretty reckless, like forreal. & this song. lovely.)
Of course I got tea because tea and salmon are how I live. Oh, speaking of salmon, when I was packing my bag to come to the aquarium I was like "I should take some food in case I get hungry" and I was gonna grab my salmon because salmon is life, but then I was like "lol I'm going to an aquarium that is so wrong to be eating fish in front of the fish like I can't do that" so then what did I grab instead? TUNA! I grabbed a tuna and crackers pre-packaged packet thing like they sell at dollar tree, but bigger because they don't have dollar tree in New Zealand. But like LOL TUNA IS STILL A FISH. Literally the reason I didn't bring my salmon was because it was a fish but then I brought tuna which is also a fish. Like what. Sometimes I just don't think. But I wasn't hungry so I didn't eat it anyways, but still, it's the fact that it was still a fish in an aquarium and it was kinda ironicly funny.
So anyways, since Michelle is from Perth I was talking to her about Coral Bay and the whale sharks and such to get a local's input. She actually hasn't been to Coral Bay because when they get holidays they usually go to like Bali or Europe or somewhere far away because they don't get many holidays, but her sister just did the whale shark snorkel and she loved it and thought it was amazing. Her sister lives in Auckland near the zoo. Her sister's boyfriend is actually turning 30 this weekend and that's why she's here. But then she said that Ningaloo Reef (the one with the whale sharks) is actually a lot better than the Great Barrier Reef according to a bunch of like professional scientists and divers because it's more protected, less touristy, and much more alive. She convinced me that I definitely need to go do my tour of western Australia instead of going back to Cairns because I feel like I would definitely have the best time with the whale sharks and such. Also Michelle was lowkey super scared of the sharks in the tank because they had sharp teeth and such, but she said that she's not even scared of the whale sharks because even though they're huge they're harmless. So even though I wasn't scared of these sharks at all and was super at peace with them, it was still nice to hear that even though they're literally huge the whale shark's aren't intimidating at all, even with their size. So yeah I definitely must do that before coming back to the states in a couple months.
In a few minutes Adam came out with our pictures and videos on a flash drive for us and gave us our certificates of survival. It was nice. We kept sitting there, watching the interesting fish and talking though.
I finally found a sign about the fish we had been looking at for probably like an hour, including the time we were staring at them before the shark dive. They're just so interesting and I wasn't kidding when I said hypnotic. I could've sat there watching them forever. Eventually I peeled myself away to go to the penguins, but I'll get to that.
So these fish were actually, guess what... ELEPHANT SHARKS. ELEPHANT. SHARK. ELEPHANT SHARKS! Like WHAT. Those are my two favorite things like ever (except for my beloved Pal). Okay I kinda want one. I still want a real elephant, and it'd be super cool to have a more sharky shark, but I'll take all three. Charge it to my grandmother's card (wink), just kidding.
I can see they're called elephant sharks because of their trunky nose, but they look more like leopards than elephants, but I've already seen a leopard shark, so I know that that name was already taken. To be honest their noses kinda bother me, but their wings make up for it. Also in the tank with them was that long fish that I saw on my snorkel in Bali that was totally intriguing also. I still have no idea what it is....maybe I'll google it.
So eventually I decided to go explore the rest of the aquarium so I could head back and take a nap. So I walked back to the penguins, which were almost back to the beginning. The penguins were cool. They had King Penguins and King Penguin babies and some other type of penguin that started with a G...Gentoo penguins.
I'm very proud of this penguin picture. He was framed perfectly, probably standing there on purpose.
I thought these were Emperor penguins, but now I think that's the kind with the like feather crown. (hold up, I'm gonna google it real quick). NOPE. I was right. These are indeed Emperor Penguins. See, I know my marine animals. Okay so now I just googled King Penguin and they look the same...are they the same? I mean Emperor and King are both names for rulers, so I guess it's possible. The King penguin pictures make them look shorter and fatter, but with the same coloring going on. I don't know if that's just the pictures tho. Let me do a new Google search. Okay so google says that King penguins are smaller but similarly colored compared to Emperor penguins. Hm. Interesting.
Okay so I guess according to this they were King Penguins, because the chicks definitely looked like that brown puff instead of the Happy Feet penguins. But in my mind the adults still look more like the Emperor than the King. Ah, whatever. Well, you have the picture of the aquarium penguin above this Googled comparison picture, you can decide (but in reality they are King Penguins. They just don't really look like it to me).
They also had this "feel the penguin water" thing where you put your hand in this thing full of water that's as cold as the water in the penguin habitat and it was a million times colder than the shark water. It was legitimate freezing. The challenge was to last 30 seconds and I probably lasted like 4 seconds.
Then I moved on to see the rest of the small aquarium. There was a frozen giant squid which was pretty cool. They also covered the walls with a bunch of facts, like most aquariums do. In this section though, they were all about the Southern Ocean. Growing up, I had always been taught there are 7 continents and 4 oceans (Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific, and Indian). To learn there is a 5th ocean, the Southern Ocean, seriously shook me to my core and internally seriously upset me. Like why keep that from me? What is the point in not teaching us about this fifth ocean? Like why? I don't understand why we are taught about four oceans and pretend the fifth one doesn't exist. After everyone gets over the whole equal gender and equal race rights, bet I will start an equal ocean education movement. Like I'm seriously upset to learn that we just act like this fifth ocean doesn't exist when it clearly does. Like that's just not okay. & I can't blame common core because I didn't grow up with common core. I also can't blame Obama because I was way to old to learn about an extra ocean when he came into office. So who am I to blame? Can't blame Queen Anne's County education because what about that time I was at Olde Mill Christian Academy? Man. I guess I'll just have to blame myself for just believing that I wasn't being lied to about something so seemingly trivial my whole life.
So I needed to sit to take in this new information. Good thing I made it back to those enchanting elephant sharks. So I sat and watched them for a bit more.
Eventually when I recomposed myself, I moved on. I passed a tank with some bass in it.
Then I was in the shark tunnel. It reminded me of the one at the aquarium in...Melbourne? Sydney? ah, somewhere down under back in 2012. It was kinda neat being on the other side when I was just inside the tank an hour ago. There was a "shark cage" group going in now, which meant that they wore snorkel equipment instead of dive equipment and just floated in a net about two feet into the tank and the sharks were on the other side of the net. Honestly, I was going to do both because I love sharks so much, but when I was booking it I realized that the one with the net would seem so lame after doing the dive (it's scheduled so the dive is always first). I was most definitely right. I'm glad I didn't waste my money doing that as well. (Also now that I think of it, it was definitely the Sydney aquarium that had the shark tunnel because I was wearing the same outfit I wore to the wax museum and that was in Sydney.)

So after the shark tunnel there were a couple small fish tanks with various fish, like one with a puffer fish and one with an octopus.

Sea Dragons
Then there was a small seahorse section, with a few tanks of different types of sea horses, including the long nose sea horse and the yellow seahorse. They also had a tank of sea dragons. They're one of the only aquariums to have that, and New Zealand is the only place in the world where you can recreationally dive to see sea dragons. They're in the south part of the south island and they live very deep in the ocean but come up to the surface in the south island (I forget why....) which is how you can see them on your dives because otherwise they're too deep.
That was pretty much the whole aquarium. It was insanely small. If I was just going for the aquarium, I would be extremely disappointed but because I did the shark dive, I thought it was well worth the money, especially considering I got three shark teeth, hundreds of pictures, several videos, a hot drink, and aquarium entry all included. & they set up and took apart all the gear for me so I could just enjoy the dive. It was definitely worth every cent and probably a bit more, but it wouldn't've been if I had just paid aquarium entry and wanted to see the aquarium.
Next to the giftshop they had their Finding Nemo tank, with the angel fish, clown fish, and the dory fish.

In the giftshop I got some post cards and some stamps, but I'm two stamps and one post card short because I miscalculated in my head, but oh well. I'll get it all sorted eventually.
Then I went out the exit, where I saw a shark car and had a great view of the Auckland skyline.
After wandering around for a bit in search of the free aquarium to city shuttle (it wasn't yet running in the morning for as early as I had to be there for the shark dive, which is why I Ubered there), I decided to go back to the entrance to look for/ask about the shuttle. But when I got to the entrance, the shuttle was right there and it was getting ready to leave - perfect timing! So I hoped on board and took a window seat.
So the bus looks like a shark because it's for the aquarium. I love it and think it's the most adorable bus ever. But whenever we were stopped, like at a red light or something, and there were people they kept making fun of it. Like there was this group of boys like totally drunk (at like 1pm on a Monday) and they were like making fun of the bus and the driver. I'm sure the driver is used to it because it's his job to drive the bus, but like I felt so bad for him. Like it's not his fault he's driving a shark; it's just a job. Gotta get paid somehow. Oh well hopefully it doesn't bother him.
The bus dropped us off at the ferry dock and as I walked back to my flat, I realized I hadn't been to town since before Easter (like the real Easter break, not Greek Easter lol), except the one time I went to Father Ted's with Celeste, but we just went straight to Father Ted's and back so it doesn't really even count. I also passed two places that smelled like the sold actual fried chicken, so I'm super excited to eventually drum up the motivation/energy to go check to see if they actually have fried chicken some day.
Once I made it back to my flat, I uploaded some pictures and put the flash drive and shark teeth in a bag with my piece of sea glass I found in Coromandel so that I won't lose them. I'm definitely bringing them back to the states with me!
Then I attempted to work on my reflection paper and eventually did it and handed it in and went to bed. It was a great day.
Until next time,

Heaven Knows, We Belong Way Down Below

S(aturday) stands for SCUBA (which stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus). My first scuba diving in Australia! I had been dreaming about this for four years, ever since I snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef.
Okay, so imma be real with ya'll. I'm lowkey terrified of diving. I usually always have problems with my ears and I'm scared my brain is gonna pop. Two past experiences lead me to this level of terror. I will now explain:
Okay so when I first got my Open Water certification, before I had even entered the pool, this guy goes to jump into the pool like he was jumping off a boat and his tank literally went into his head and it started bleeding everywhere because he just cracked his head open. Like I didn't even get in the water yet and already someone was almost dead (okay so that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but the guy did crack his head wide open). Obviously he shouldn't have looked down (because ya know, GRAVITY) and maybe his tank was a bit too high to start with, but still. They're lucky I completed my certification.
Then when I was getting my Advanced certification, I might've had an ear infection while diving. Which is a big no-no. Okay, so not maybe, I totally did. But I took the yucky medicine for a whole two weeks before I went and it was supposed to be gone, and I couldn't just reschedule my dives (well, I probably could but then I wouldn't be with my other Beach Patrol-ers). Anyways, so I went diving anyways and of course it totally killed my ears. But then on like our third dive I had blood coming out of everywhere. I was coughing it up; it was coming out of my nose; it was even coming out of the sides of my mask so it looked like it was coming out of my ears bc it was that bad. I thought my brain exploded and I was gonna die because I went diving with an ear infection. They're very lucky (well I'm very lucky) that I didn't start balling as soon as I saw red. I saw my destiny all right, that destiny was death. My heart spilled onto the floor and I definitely thanked God my brain was still part of me (I Saw Red lyrics skillfully adapted to fit my situation; thank you, Warrant, for being one of my obsessions).  But anyways, the instructors were like "dude it's just a nose bleed, calm down", but I've never had a nose bleed before in my life so how was I to know? They also said that at the depth of recreational diving it's actually super duper difficult aka pretty much impossible for my brain to explode and for death to occur. So that comforts me.
But yeah so anyways, I always gotta give myself a nice pep talk before diving (usually for a full week-3 days before actually) and Heaven Knows (by the Pretty Reckless) needs to be played a couple million times, but ya know, I just substitute it for Cherry Pie. Then once I'm down there I'm totally fine and am one with the fishies and life is good. It's just the getting there part.
Strangely enough, this time I was not anxious and ready to die before the dive. Maybe it's because my last couple dives have been cancelled due to weather (eh hm, HONDURAS. CAYMAN. I'm lookin at you, ya awfuls). Maybe it's because, like I said, I have been looking forward to diving in Australia for FOUR YEARS. Either way, I totally appreciate that I was totally calm the whole time.
So I had to walk to the dive shop. (lol long enough background introduction, right? Time to move on to the actual story.) It was in town, a couple streets away from the main section of town. So like since I had to walk there and walking practically kills me I went early and got a smoothie and still ended up being early, but it's okay because if you're not 15 minutes early, you're late.
So I got all my paperwork and stuff situated, then they (the dive shop workers) got my tank and set it up with the equipment for me. I brought my own mask and snorkel because I heard the snorkeling was great (planned on doing that during the beach days but it was wayyyy to rough), so I used my pink mask and snorkel and was awarded pink flippers as well. I love matching!
It was a dive with me, a girl from London who would be my dive buddy, a guy from France, a guy from the shop to be his dive buddy, and a guy from Sweden as the guide. Nice small group, but we shared the boat with a group of new divers. Oh, a boat. Momentary panic quickly subsided when they said we would not be jumping off the boat to enter the water, but simply falling back off the boat (as if that's any better). I never even learned how to do that, but thankfully it was really easy and the guy said I did perfect. & I didn't die so that's obviously a good thing (if you think it's not, get off my blog right now, you jerk).
Yay! Time to dive in Australia! How exciting! We go down about 13/14 meters, and my ears are totally fine. Like no problems at all. Like the airplane hurt them way worse. Thinking back now, maybe it's because I was so calm and had no inner thoughts of death. But also maybe it's just that I wasn't sick and the water was warm and clear and almost perfect. Either way, yay for me.
Unfortunately, every positive comes with a negative (at least in my life, but I'm pretty certain it's that way for the whole universe, yin yang and such). In this case, it meant I was breathing A LOT. Usually I'm down there and I breathe so little people ask me if I'm okay. Like I do not go through air. This was my 11th dive and people usually think I'm like a profession based upon my breathing. Not this time. It was like I couldn't get enough air. Fortunately, my dive buddy was having the same issue so when I was out so was she. We lasted 39 minutes, and the maximum time was only 50 minutes, so it really wasn't that bad, just the fact that I got that low is mentally horrible for me. I thought it was because I was like super thirsty so I was drinking the air like the water bottle when we got back on the boat, but my dive buddy (yeah sorry, I don't know her name. Maybe Amelia? Is that a British name? eh, idk) brought up the point that the current was extremely strong and we therefore had to work a lot harder while underwater. This is a very valid point that is probably the reason why. My pink flippers, although super cute because they totally brought my pink gear together, were like barely an extension of my feet. I don't know how they even counted as flippers, but they definitely did not help my swimming, so I was working super overtime trying to stay with the group and not drift away. (Sorry to disappoint, I don't feel like making any drift away references here; lucky you.) This is also why, if you watch my video (WHICH YOU ALL SHOULD - it's on my Facebook now; it's too large to post to Blogger because sometimes Blogger sucks) I'm like flailing about like a drowning animal rather than scuba diving all nice and neat and hands folded and such like I'm supposed to, because I had to legit fight the current. Considering I had to come up early but also I did stay with the group on my time down there, I'm not sure who won. I'd say it was a draw.
Okay, let me take a sec to mention one totally real and critical thing: the corals legit are dying. Like right now the big thing is the whitening of the coral of the Great Barrier Reef. Well, I wasn't in the GBR and this coral wasn't white (yet) but it was pretty colorless. I'm not sure if it's usually colorless in this area, but up in the GBR I remember such vibrant colors that if I go back in June and it's all white, I seriously might cry. So like it's a real issue and something needs to be done to prevent the dying of all the coral.
Okay, back to my dive. Besides colorless coral, I did see some colorful fish (the most vibrant being blue). I also saw Marlin (Nemo's dad) lookin for his kid (aka I saw some clownfish). There were some jellyfish, pufferfish, and lionfish as well, but I actually got really excited over the turtle I saw. I see turtles all the time and this wasn't a big turtle, so not sure why it was so pleasing, but it was.
Guess what? I SAW A SHARK! Okay, I admit, in the Caribbean I do see nurse sharks sometimes (like more often than you'd think based upon how hype I get at any mention of sharks) while snorkeling in the islands. (One specific time comes to mind - the time I realized I was not going to law school. Okay so like I was totally set on being a lawyer, right? Maritime of course because hello, addicted to the ocean. But like then we went on this snorkeling trip off one of the Caribbean islands [maybe Grand Turk?] and the boat driver was like "yeah I went to law school, got my degree and now I'm living the life driving a boat in the Caribbean" and I was like "woah I'm so not wasting all that money and time to get a law degree when it would probably have me end up just like this guy - totally not using my degree playing in the Caribbean" so then I decided to not go to law school, and that's when I saw some nurse sharks while snorkeling.) So anyways, I saw a leopard shark! It was really small and hiding in some coral so it wasn't really exciting. Also I thought sharks had to keep swimming or else they die? Well this guy was either dead or barely swimming. There were a few other sharks that were much more alive and swimming that the guide kept pointing out (or attempting to), but try as I might I couldn't find them. So that was kinda frustrating now that I think about it, but oh well. At least I got to see one.
Then, as you know, I had to come up 10 minutes early due to lack of air. The boat driver said I could snorkel in the water if I wanted while I waited, but I was like almost dehydrated and very tired of fighting the current, so I just climbed back on board and gladly accepted a water. After we made it back to the dive shop, I filled out my dive log and started my walk back to the house for my leftover pizza and bed.
